We are so excited to be bringing you NEW projects now that we have finally been able to safely have them photographed. First up, our Apple Lane Project. This project was a fun challenge because it challenged our typical design process. Unlike our usual projects, our clients only needed two spaces updated and furnished. The goal for this project was lighter and brighter, while keeping a traditional feel.
We’ll start our tour in the mudroom, which is one of my favorite spaces to date! Our team custom designed the cabinetry in this space and had it crafted by a local woodworking studio. When designing a custom built-in like this, there are a few things we always consider for our clients: storage, comfort, and longevity. I knew this space would be the workhorse of the home, so a combination of hanging, closed and open storage was a no-brainer. We added horizontal shiplap as a nod to equestrian style and modernized it with these amazing modern oak and leather hooks.
A Glimpse at the Before
One of the big challenges in this space was keeping the original wood stained windows which our clients loved. Our solution was leaning into the Modern Equestrian vibe that blended the natural wood tone with fresh paint. The cabinetry is painted in Farrow & Ball’s French Gray (one of my all-time favorite colors) and paired with aged brass hardware on the lower drawers. A running theme throughout the house is a balance of warm and cool tones and this pairing helped maintain that.
To finish off the mudroom, we sourced a beautiful vintage rug with deep jewel tones that tied it all together. This dark background is perfect for a mudroom because it will never show anything and simply gets better with age. We added leather baskets for another texture, breaking up the cabinetry and tied in the modern hooks. A custom roman shade was crafted by our workroom in a heavy neutral linen. Our workroom also created the perfectly tailored bench cushion in a gray wooly fabric for the perfect cozy spot for putting on shoes.
The project had beautiful bones, with lots of wood that the clients wanted to keep. In order to hit their “must-have” list in the living room, we painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s Sea Pearl to brighten and modernize the space. I love how the white’s cool undertones balance the warmth of the original wood window casings and trim.
Next, we updated the outdated brick fireplace by painting it Benjamin Moore’s Balboa Mist for subtle contrast against the Sea Pearl walls. It was imperative in the design to add dimension to the fireplace by slightly varying the color for maximum impact on that focal wall. To give the fireplace a little something “extra” we used the existing mantel and painted it Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe. The inky blue anchors the fireplace on that large wall in a way that feels fresh and modern without being too heavy. Our clients had an extensive art collection they wanted to work with, so we added a large mat with a modern black frame for the piece above the mantle. To balance it’s square shape, I sourced an oversized vintage perfume bottle for the perfect fireplace vignette.
The living room received a total facelift with new furniture to compliment that pretty new paint job. We sourced a beautiful new sofa with the most sophisticated clean lines and paired it with a pair of custom swivel chairs. We upholstered the swivels (which allow for maximum flexibility in this space) in a neutral solution dyed fabric for easy cleaning. The glass coffee table has gorgeous organic lines that allow for optimum traffic flow throughout the space.

Having many unique challenges in a space offers an opportunity to reassign the space and create something entirely specific to the client’s needs all the while ensuring the changes that you are embarking on integrate with adjacent spaces. We are happy to say that this design journey with our clients checked off all the boxes.
